Yesterday I was approached by a fellow shooter and he asked me what my views were on the Open Class.

My reply was that in my opinion the Open Class was created for those that have a disability or injury where it makes it hard or impossible for them to shoot the positionals i.e. Standing and Kneeling like in the Main round.

Now having said this I also said I may be wrong as I have seen quite a few able-bodied shooters in this class.

    So my questions are...

    What is Open Class.?

    Why has it been created.?

Is the Open Class open for any shooter able-bodied or not.?

It is a class for (ANY) shooters to take any shot in any position that is Safe.

That is "close" to the official definition from memory of the meeting.

I therefore ask myself why it is not more popular?

    Why should it be??

I think most like the idea of shooting against fellow " graded" shooters?
    .
If Open got bigger entries we would probably have to grade it!!

Personally I like standers and kneelers in a competition.

Thanks for that Simon, I didn’t realise it was open to all shooters. This class would be good for those new to the game then or those that don’t want to damage their grading from the winter league.

Depends, if you reach the summer ungraded, your in ungraded. So cant win anything until you have the 3 or 6 shoots and are graded.
Its good for those that can not or do not want to do standers and kneelers, or its good if you want to try new kit and are worried the results would upset your grade, though of course you could just enter the shoot as no score and not hand a card in.

What it is really good at, is keeping people shooting.

I've shot in open class due to back injury last year after the euros which I have to wear a back brace for work and shooting and elbow surgery to my left arm which being right handed is the one I support the gun with on standing shots I fitted a sling to my 9015 to see if that helps with standing shots and it's work in progress

The real Challenge is three positional shooting . to pit your self against the course and the best shooters to find out how you stack up . BUT if you cannot . or do not want to take on that challenge . then open is for you . remember though if you do the first GP in open . you have to do the rest in open . ness they have changed it . having a dodgy knee . i have done open last year . the best bit is coming to a standing / kneeling land , and knowing it is a Gimme . Love it . i do the winter league in normal class but that is 40 targets . go with the flow brothers of the slug ??? HOLLY

    Not so.

You can enter pcp, open or spring in any gp. Mix and match to suit.

I did wonder , nothing seems to stay the same for long . the main thing though is to enjoy your shooting . does not matter whether you are the man or old wally . who cannot hit a cows arse with a banjo . Enjoy ??? HOLLY

Its still quite a challenge to clear a course sitting in competition, theres no shame to shooting in Open. I don't now but when or if I don't feel the urge to shoot disciplines any more I'll the there, the alternative would be giving up. I believe HFT is shot ungraded, so I dont see why Open FT cant work the same. :)
