Since there's lots of posts about what's a good group, what's a bad one, what can be done and what people say can't I decided to start a thread so people can post their groups and see what's what.

To keep the thing broadly on track it would help when people post to know, distance, position, indoor/outdoor, shot count, gun, ammo and anything else of possible use, but if people don't want to then whatever...

I'll kick off with this one

10 shots at 55 yds outdoors, JSB exact expresses sized to 4.48, Walther Dominator. Didn't aim off for wind. Benched with bean bag.

I'd say this is what I aim for, but only achieve rarely. When I'm next practising i'll put up some more normal groups. I'm fairly convinced 10 is not enough to draw conclusions and probably doing a group over a normal charge is the way to go.

This is my all time favourite group, seen them in doors as well about 55 yards away.

    Sorry Rob couldn't resist

Needs must. Massive apple shortage down here. Loads of Midlanders have been coming south to stock up. Aparently someone in up there has cornered the market and there's none to be had.

    Long range

Some time back....May 2008 to be exact. I was a bit obsessed with longer range groups. and to try these new Mossies I had just got hold of. EV2 MK1 when it was shooting ok. This was on the 100yd range at Dowry Hill on a very windless day in May. Shooting was not rested, just off the knee like the standard FT sitting possition.;)

On this day I was trying 3 rifles. Zenith no5 a Ripley AR5s and the EV. This was the best group after trying all 3 rifles and about 3 hours of my time.:eek:o

The reason for me posting this is that my 55yds groups are much worse........well I do use a real gun with a spring in it.

I have been searching my laptop for pictures of my good groups when it suddenly occurred to me that I don't have any as I can't shoot good groups!

The attached picture is what I would consider good in calm conditions outdoors shot from FT sitting position. 5 shots at 55yrds. JSB 8.4grn 770fps, Steyr LG110.

little finger for comparison, yes I bite my nails :(

Some more, not that interesting or impressive to the really skilled guys who can produce 1 holers however they are just for reference and anyway my daddy is bigger than your daddy...so there :p

1st pic, left side is a batch that I rejected as it wasn't grouping satisfactorily indoors at 55yrds, 10 shots. On the right is a very good batch again 10 shots, indoors at 55yrds. Pellets were JSB 8.4grn straight from the tin at 770fps in my Steyr LG110. The target rings are 40:20:10mm, shot from FT sitting position.

2nd pic, this is 30 shots indoors at 55yrds using JSB 8.4grn direct from tin at 765fps in my Steyr LG110, FT sitting position. The 8ring measures 18mm and from memory the whole group (ignoring the 1 bad shot) was 24mm edge to edge. This was done approx. 2yrs ago with the best batch of pellets I've ever had I will never repeat as it was mind numbingly boring.

3rd pic, my average 30yrd zero group outdoors using JSB Exact 8.4grn at 770fps in my Steyr LG110. 5 shots FT sitting position.

    Conor

If you think my groups are crap sitting they are even worse from the bench, so no I don't bench rest

Two groups from My Theoben TTR1 .177 with a 14 inch LW barrel
H&N Barracuda Match sized to 4.51 @ 686.3 (averaged) fps 11.14 ft lbs (roughly)
Large pic (without dot) is a 17 shot magazine indoors at 30 yards, rested on a small cushion.
Pic with dot is 5 shots (from a mag) outdoors, prone off my hft mat at 45 yards
Both are covered by a 5p, which is enough for HFT or clean kills in my opinion?

    Regards,
    Rhys

Erratic wind from 11 o'clock direction today. This test card was almost at ground level, in the lee of a hedge about 2 metres high and 3 metres to the left. Distance 40 yards.

Hammerli AR20 on a bean bag, scope on 30x.

Seven shots from each tin of pellets, shot consecutively and with no break for barrel cleaning etc.

Left hand group, JSB Exact Express, middle group JSB Exact, right hand group JSB Exact Jumbo. All from tins with red lids!!

Cross hairs on the red cross. Gun obviously not zeroed for this distance but that isn't relevant.

    Springer group...

HW97, sitting, 55yds... aimpoint underneath key tip... Key measures 8mm, so vertical spread was 10mm CTC or if you are Conor, 14.5mm. Wasn't worried about the windage spread as I just was using a consistent aimpoint and didn't move for wind.

Mozzies, straight from tin. 10 shots.

What's depressing is that I missed 7 on Saturday not up and down, but left and right... no matter what the group is like, I still need to stick the X-hair in the right place to start with ;). There's no trophies on the plinking range... :D
