Is it a stamp, or has it been cut?

    Looks rather like it.

If the S stands for anything literal it's probably something in German. The nature of the "engraving" suggests it's meant to be permanent but not widely on display, so perhaps it would be meaningful to a future service engineer.

The barrels are hammer forged over a mandrel.
    Spanndorn is German for mandrel.
So I guess there were 3 mandrels and your barrel was formed on mandrel 1.

I've got a barley twist with VERY similar markings but I'm loathed to take the air stripper off to check!
