    Hi,

I'm considering buying a benchrest air rifle from abroad but It would only be 7.5 joule. Would this be adequate for 25m benchrest or is it too weak to combat the effects of wind on the pellet?

If it's too weak, does anyone mod these rifles for the UK power limit?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I was chatting to Harry Preston of Steyr UK yesterday and his take is that 7.5 joules is perfectly adequate for 25yd targets. Cannot comment personally as I use a 16 joule gun.

On a slightly different tack, I have been shooting some 25yd bench rested pistol with an Air Arms Alfa Poject pistol and that is only running at 3.8ft/lbs and is still stunningly accurate

Accuracy is not the issue, you will be disadvantaged by the effect of wind on your pellet.

25m indoor, IMO the lower power would be advantageous but shooting out into wind then the wind will move your lowered powered pellet more.

What rifle are you inquiring about please as to modifying the power?

Whatever the wind drift would be at 12fpe, it would be roughly 40% more at 6fpe. For example, 5mm becomes 7mm.

This assumes all other things remain unchanged.

    Thanks for the replies!

I've been looking at the FWB 800 Alu X Benchrest version and the Anschutz 9003 Precise Benchrest. Are any of these mod-able to 12fpe?

He mods both the rifles you are interested in. You might be able to get in touch through Harris engineering. He is known as hareng on the Airgun BBS. Neil.
