Never had any experience with them, so looking for some good advice/ recommendation, I'm thinking of the red dot type

What do you want to know? I've used quite a few on pistols over the years from long eye relief scopes with magnification, to different types of red dot.

It's for a bit of plinking and paper punching , I'll also be looking at some 10 metre target shooting

You'll need open sights for official 10M paper punching but for general plinking a red dot is great. Don't make the mistake of getting a bigger dot than you need: maximum 3 MOA if you want precision. The bigger dots are for snap shooting or rapid fire but not for accurate work. There are a million cheap ones out there so it's impossible to make a recommendation as they vary so much.

Basically there are the tube style and the open "TV screen" style. The open style give you more visibility of the target around the lens but can suffer from parallax error. With the tube style the tube blocks out more of the target but it's easier to centre the dot to minimise parallax error. As with scopes it's best to try a few rather than buying blind.
