Hi, I shot to the NSRA rules first time last night, but didn't know the best way of supporting the rear of the rifle.
I tried it both on my fist, and on a crossed arm under the butt.

What is recommended, are there any tutorials of different positions to try please?

    What about using a glove?

    Thanks - Geoff.

I think most use a small sandbag under the butt which can be squeezed to vary the height. Caldwell and others sell a front/rear bag set for this.

I thought NSRA was no rear support, hand only?

    Yes, you are indeed correct.
NSRA clearly state that the rifle can be supported by one rest only at the forend.
(That rest must also be flat).

Mr Eaton’s ‘thought’ and advice on the subject are incorrect.

A glove is permitted on the non shooting hand.

Other than that I can offer no useful advice as I’ve never shot benchrest to NSRA rules however I have read them.

It’s what ever you find the most comfortable and accurate, I tend to rest the rifle butt on my non shooting hand which is across my chest resting on my bicep.
    The rules are:
When in the firing position, the rifle butt must be located in the shoulder and the stock supported by the shooters hands. The non-firing hand may be placed on the bench and support the rear end of the rifle. This includes the area between the bottom of the pistol grip or any part of the rear of the stock (including butt- plate).
No extensions for the purpose of holding the rifle are permitted outside the normal profile of the stock.
No pad or other support may be placed between the hand and the bench. The rear end of the rifle may not rest on or touch the bench, or any pad or other artificial support on the bench, when in the firing position, but may do so between shots and when re-loading. Although the shooters cheek may also be in contact with the stock no other part of the shooters body may be in contact with the rifle.
A glove may be used on the non-shooting hand conforming to rule 8.7.

    SHOOTING GLOVES
The glove must be made of flexible material and must not extend more than 50 mm (2 in) above the wrist measured from the centre of the wrist knuckle.
    Hope this helps
    Good luck

I tried holding it on the arm, but preferred it in my fist.
I did read the rules, was thinking of trying it on a target glove as those are quite solid.

Looking for inspiration really in other things to try.

    Thanks!

They don't define a glove in the rules - you could use a boxing glove so long as it didn't extend 2" beyond your wrist.

We used to shoot our in-house BR comp to NSRA rules, and when we did most people used a target glove or padded motorcycle glove under the rear of the stock.

Target glove on order. Guess if I don’t like it I can use it for FT anyway.

    Thanks!
