I had the same question with the 4-16 mag on both scopes, and i opted for the viper. It comes with everything the Airmax comes with except it includes mounts too and is slightly cheaper.

I can't fault the viper, and it comes with a sidewheel. A larger one is available from MTC

I have the 8-32 Airmax on my MPR FT and like it a lot. It comes with removable sunshade, 4" sidewheel, half-mildot reticle, and great built in flip-up covers. The covers and reticle made it the right choice for me.
If shooting FT then definitely go for the x32 mag, for HFT the x24 is fine.

I would go for a bushnell elite 4200 8 x32 x44 front focus you may get one around your budget,

Second hand big nikko. I had a hawke sidewinder last year, put a big nikko on this year and saw my scores improve. The higher mag allows for much more accurate range finding. Just my two penneth worth ;)
