Anyone know of a hard moulded type rifle case with internal dimensions of approx. 40" x 14" x 4"?
I've had a Plano DLX double for about 10 years and it's done OK. Big enough to hold an EV2 with big Nikko mounted. Reasonably tough, fairly light and not too pricey. It's far more rigid than the cheap plastic Flambeau cases.
I've also got a Peli Storm iM3200 and an iM3220 (but looked at the Peli 1720 and 1750) which are really heavy duty, they are significantly more robust than anything else on the market. I think you could drop them off the top of a tall building and the contents would be absolutely fine. Comes at a cost though and they are heavy. The wheels really help to move them around. The iM3300 is the longer version.
The Plano is fine for most stuff and can be secured reasonably well, if you're just looking for a bit more protection and security than a soft bag this will do the job. The Peli cases are on another level and are the only case I'd happily hand over to a baggage handler and expect it to arrive intact at the other end. The Flambeau cases are quite flimsy and the shell material is too thin and flexible to provide any significant protection from a bash. I've still got the one my EV came in and it's only marginally better, if at all, than a really decent soft bag with proper foam but it can be locked if you have minors in the house.
Dave - Gun guard can't seem to find.
Monty - Looks good, but would like something around 40"-42"
yeah, the Plano is long. The iM3200 is a tad under 44" internal but is a big outlay. Spent ages looking before I got the Storms but really struggled to find anything with enough depth to accommodate a big scope on a high riser other than another Plano. In the end I bit the bullet and paid the money for the Storm as I wanted something shorter and stronger with some additional depth to help protect the sidewheel.
Both my son and I have Peli 1720 cases which we use to transport Theoben BTAS Elan and Daystate Platinum rifles, and yes, they are weighty, but we have absolute trust in the Peli's. The USA marines have them and drop with parachutes from Hercules planes. Hope the robustness assists you.
Have a look at the Plano 108421 All Weather case.
I've not had any experience of this case, although I have been thinking of getting one. The size is what you are after and most of the reviews are positive
Very good price for the Plano one here : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plano-42-...714?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c8beed73a
Rich, where is this available?
Daz, this come up as an American seller. Cheers Z
The peli storm m330 comes in at 50x14x6 give or take a quarter inch.
Yes it is, with all customs fees paid £96 all in. I have just ordered one
I have a gun guard I got with a rifle I just bought - I wouldn't invest in one. Bit flimsy!
My steyr fits into the peli 1750 easily Z mate with rail and high mounts.
Have a squint tomoz if you're up
I'm hoping to be at the comp tomorrow Bri.
Catch you there mate
I have had one of these for the past 2/3 years. Takes a full-sized rifle no probs.
Bit weighty, but worth the piece of mind.
