Have you ever entered the postcode you've been given for a shoot into your satnav and found it doesn't take you anywhere near where you want to go?

If I have the time, sometimes I'll go onto google maps the evening before a shoot and find the lat / long address for the gate to the club, but that's a bit of a pain and often involves 2 long numbers that I can't be bothered to write down and type into my phone.

There's potentially a better way I've just discovered and I hope it catches on.

It's called 'what3words' - instead of using long/lat to describe a location each 3m x 3m square on the face of the earth has been allocated 3 unique words as an address. You can then find that 3m x 3m square by entering the 3 words and then click navigate to on your phone to use your favourite sat nav app to take you to that location.

As an example, for those travelling to GP2 at Tawd Vale it's 3 word address is

    "Passing.Resonated.Gobblers" ( no, really it is :D )

    3 word address: ///passing.resonated.gobblers

    Iceni - cool

That ground is on my bucket list of places to shoot after I had to abandon a GP there a couple of years ago after my TX destroyed it's guides after the first shot :(

    Great idea Brian.
I remember Neil put in the wrong long/lat for Iceni a couple of years ago and ended up in deepest Norfolk. Just one wrong number is all it takes whereas three words is a lot simpler.
I’m sure I read somewhere that this or a similar system was being developed for the military to use JDAM’s with after a few cock-ups dropping bombs in the wrong place using long/lat co-ordinates...awkward..;)

You make a compelling argument against this idea, I've changed my mind :D

Most of the clubs are on the STB map, so you just pull that up and hit directions and it will give you voice directions like any other sat nav...

Great, cheers Graeme and Martin. That will save digging around on a Saturday night or Sunday morning!

I've been on about this for a year or so know (not just at shoots)

People always thought I was joking though.

I took a wrong turning recently for Newbury ground and I was swing to people that the 3 word system could differentiate between the left hand or right had gate post of the entrance.
