I would leave it long. I actually use 2 sun shades on mine. Helps to keep down the white-out due to bright sunlight. Still suffer at times, but the longer shade will help. It adds virtually nothing in weight leaving it long either, so I wouldn't cut it.

Leave it long, it takes longer for the rain drops to trickle down to the objective lens ;)

No, only thing that I have found with 2 shades on is that in some very dark lanes in woods etc it can make things a little too dark really, but that has only happened twice.

I've got a Mk1 big Nikko and I use 2 sunshades, don't ask my why as they have been on it for the past 7 years,I've never experienced any darkness issues or any issues to be honest. Its as bright and as accurate as any Leupold I've used and wouldn't swap it for one.I also use a long sunshade on my camera zoom lens and I do find this does help immensely with reducing lens flare and prevents debri and rain from getting on the lens. The only light you want coming in the scope is from what's in front of you and not from the sides,I say go long all the time...:)
