I hear a lot of enthusiasm for the barley twist barrels fitted to Steyr LG100s.

So what's it all about?

I own a Steyr LG100 complete with the fabled barley twist barrel and find it no different from my other two that have non barley barrels.

I am quite a reasonable shot, AA class, and have shot groups at 55 yards indoors and I couldn't differentiate the two. :shot:

So, what am I not getting?

(Nearly put what am I missing but thought better of it.) :D

5 shot groups at 55 yards inside 15mm Fred. :)

With barley twist and non barley twist, couldn't separate them.

    Dejavu again.

Ehyup Ken, youve asked this before......

    The technical answer was back then, the same as it is now;

"The Barley Twist barrel 100's usually sell for more second hand - so they are better!"

You shoot 15mm 5 shot groups at 55 yards? How do you ever miss a target on the course?

Or is that 15mm groups at 55 yards and 3 and 1/2" groups at 30 yards :D

    Adios.

Hi Adios, the wind isn't much of a factor indoors :p

Conor's answer made the most sense, Adam's was good too.

Looks like aesthetics is the answer to the mystery that haunts me night and day. ;)

Its better 'cos it looks nice. :D

They are hammer forged on mandrels which produce the outer exterior design. I believe hammer forged barrels are far more expensive to produce and it is commonly agreed they are a superior barrel performance wise. The process work hardens the steel also so will have a longer shooting life.
Of course there's no reason why a button drawn air rifle barrel won't be as accurate it's just produced by a much cheaper process!

AS an aside, I'm given to understand from Harry Preston that Steyr barrels are chrome plated inside and out.

    No ken,there nickel plated.
Apparently barley twist barrels are more prone to make you crap at standers and make you want to take them kneeling instead, happen that's where your going wrong ken!!!:D:D:D

You won't be able to buy one brand new certainly, but you may find one second hand but not in .20 I don't think. I have never heard of or come across one ever.

    Regards
