Some of the damage doesn't show up with front lighting only after moving the led up and down the barrel !
Going to try an opaque led.
No idea how the damage occurred, I bought it as an hardly used barrel to try on my P800 but that's another story

I used a £10 USB microscope, the 3volt led, a limiting resistor ,bit of wire , heat shrink sleeving and a lot of fiddling :)

Yes Rob , it was not as accurate as I expected ,it would throw pellets off in all directions .
It wasn't good enough for Benchrest.

Yep good photos, all of this does really show that the gun you buy is a bit of a lottery in respect of the quality of the components that make it !

More of a lottery if you dont know the history of it .

Probably pretty safe if its new .

Just a guess but , I'd say those marks on Gordon's ev barrel are post manufacture .
Interesting that they dont appear to have collected any lead .............

here's some nastiness on an offcut , that i've been practising on , pretty horrid eh ?

If i remember , nothing mind blowingly hardcore has been shoved down there.

maybe a good idea, if you are going to shove things down your barrel ......don't rotate them

're the Ev2 barrel , I had it machined to fit the P800 , probably put a tin through it and cleaned with a VFG kit from breech to muzzle.
So you may be right, can't see a VFG kit causing that kind of damage though .

Perhaps I should use a lower mag scope , then I wont see it !!.

Did you take that photo Phil ?

Talking about scopes , has anyone tried an Otoscope to view the crown and lead in?(the ones for looking down yer lugholes) . I think most have 2.5 mag but no focusing unless you get the mega expensive models ........just wondered :)

I think that's what was used to look down my barrel to find out why it so bad!

    yeah mate .

i used my gadget ........... kept pressing buttons and eventually it happened .

I wouldn't be surprised if that marking in my pic was either scotchbrite or fine wet n dry ....looks serious dunnit

That's interesting about the 4 ports - didn't know that! I suppose the trade-off is the increased lost volume of the whole setup. I assume they're all joined by a radial groove in the barrel's OD..?

Nice work with the reg pressure tester.. I suspect you might be in high demand once you have one as I don't know anyone else who's gone to the trouble of getting one made. Most frustrating if you need to set one up properly.

Nice pics.. shame about the mark in the bore. I bet it would take the deliberate shoving of something fairly hard down there to cause that :(

Is that post-cleaning? If not it's interesting that there's no lead trapped in it..

Could also be reaming marks left over from production - I'd guess it's quite possible that those on the lands might not be fully "ironed out" by the buttoning process.

Yes, the photo of the Ev2 was after cleaning with a VFG kit relatively gently . I don't think the damage was caused by the kit .

As far as I know the VFG felts follow/rotate with the rifling , I can't think what would cause such a deep gouge in the metal unless it was caused by the original machining of the rifling ??

A friend has just had a brand spanking CZ barrel for his Steyr delivered. So I grabbed it before he fitted it. This has never been shot and still had grease inside it. We will find out this morning if it works or not. o_O

And now..... photos of my FWB P70FT , this barrel has just shot a 250 ex 250 with AA Fields 4.52 .

Breech was fairly easy to take, but crown is about inch down its shroud so struggled a bit .

Very little lead in unlike the EV2

The barrels on the P70ft( serial 500xxx upwards) were made in house by FWB unlike the P800 which uses an LW barrel with only the choke and final machining done by FWB.

Quite a steep leade-in Gordon . Smooth finish though ......

As you say, tricky to get at the crown down that shroud , looks a bit torn though, it would appear not to matter ????? .............nice pics .

stuck indoors with this crappy lurgy ............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
