I've noticed a few FT shooters use heavy weight pellets in the wind and some shoot heavy weight pellets all the time. What are peoples opinions.

    Heavies only suit better shooters.

Jsb heavies can be a good choice for hft if your barrel likes them. They generally don't have a massive difference in poi vs. 8.4gr because they have a very good ballistic coefficient. In my experience the difference at 45y between the two was only a quarter of a mildot.

I tried jsb heavies in my ftp900 at the weekend. It was very windy and they worked really well. I'm going to test them on a still day and see how they group. There seemed to be very little difference in poi as Beefy said.

I have tested 10.34gn and 8.44gn from the same gun and in the same conditions and I have a click chart for both weights. At my 30 yd zero, both pellets produced a one hole group and the group size remained almost identical out to 45 yds. Between 45 and 55 yds, the 8.44gn pellets gave a more consistent group. It's really a question of how much your FTP900 likes them. And the wind!

The thing is with heavies is that they’re not some magical, wind immune projectile, they get blown about the same as 8.4’s and 7.9’s or a .50 cal. For that matter.
Where they are useful though is that from my experience they get blown about more consistently. I’ve gone from 7.9’s to 10.3’s over the winter and I’m still adjusting to the heavies windage but overall I’m pretty happy with them.

Give them a try Spencer. I have shot them for a couple of years in my
AA mpr and I found them accurate and less affected by wind down on
the Marsh. You wont know until you try them.

Testing 8.44 and 10.34gr JSBs today. Both had pros and cons. Neither really stood out as better or worse.

Just out of interest what were you running the heavies at?
They tend to like 680-700fps depending on the barrel.

Pretty much spot on where they should be.
What was the wind like while you were shooting?

It was very windy, blowing from left to right with the occasional gust towards me. Theres a pic above showing the marker tapes to left of range blowing almost horizontally.

Spencer, I think a lot depends on what gun you are shooting and whether your gun likes the pellets.
I am also a firm believer in lubricating pellets with LT1 pellet lubricant, not using it I find I don't get such tight groups.I know not everyone will agree with me but it works for me, my MPR and did for my
Hammerli AR20ft until I sold it to another club member who continues to use the heavy pellets.

I also lube my pellets. As you say the groups seem tighter and when I clean the barrel with a pull through kit its always spotless.

I'm going to continue testing the 2 weights in different weather conditions to see how I get on.

far too many differences from tin to tin with heavies, 8.4,s for me any day above anything else, more consistent , tested heavies in windy conditions, its a load of rubbish that they dont move more in the wind, i didnt notice any difference, wind is wind, if it makes you feel more confident then use them otherwise just shoot whatever pellet your barrel likes and stick with them

Judging by the crate’s worth of 8.4’s you have under your stairs I reckon they’ll see you out Bob...;)
